London’s Air Ambulance Charity provides an advanced trauma team to the 10 million people who live, work and travel within the capital. Working in partnership with the NHS, the charity delivers highly skilled doctors and paramedics directly to the scene of serious accidents and medical emergencies, bringing the expertise and equipment of a hospital emergency department to the patient when every second counts.
Established in 1989, London’s Air Ambulance has been at the forefront of pre-hospital emergency medicine for more than three decades. The service is internationally recognised for pioneering many of the procedures now used by air ambulance services around the world, including carrying doctors on board, performing emergency blood transfusions at the roadside and undertaking complex surgical interventions before a patient reaches hospital.
Operating by helicopter during daylight hours and rapid response vehicles throughout the day and night, the charity is able to reach critically injured patients across London quickly and efficiently. Its specialist trauma teams respond to incidents including serious road traffic collisions, falls from height, industrial accidents, violent assaults and other life-threatening emergencies.
Since its first mission, London’s Air Ambulance has treated more than 50,000 patients and attended many of the capital’s most significant incidents, including major transport accidents, terrorist attacks and large-scale emergency events. Every day, its crews provide advanced medical care that helps save lives and improve outcomes for some of the most seriously injured people in London.
Unlike NHS emergency services, London’s Air Ambulance Charity relies on charitable donations to fund the majority of its service. Support from fundraisers, lottery players, volunteers and donors helps ensure the charity can continue providing world-class trauma care to Londoners and visitors to the capital, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
