The Lifesaving Lottery of The Wales Air Ambulance surpassed 100,000 paying members for the first time in July 2019. In doing so, the lottery joined a small elite number of other air ambulance charities whose weekly draw boasts membership into six figures and generates more than £4.5m a year.
Tower Lotteries have been working with Wales Air Ambulance since 2014, and in this time, fundraisers working under our banner on behalf of the charity, have more than doubled membership and driven income beyond all expectation.
Wales Air Ambulance is funded by the people of Wales and it is their lifesaving lottery that provides the largest percentage of the £6.5m a year needed to fund the service. Income continues to rise on a weekly basis, and this year alone, the lottery will fund over 2500 missions in Wales and have a direct influence on countless numbers of people in their hour of need.
Wales Air Ambulance operate 4 helicopters, making it the biggest fleet of any air ambulance charity in The United Kingdom. They cover a vast area but can do this quickly and smoothly from their bases in Dafen, Welshpool, Caernarfon and Cardiff. This means, they can reach anywhere in Wales within 20 minutes and due to the nature of the country, provide a lifesaving service in some rural areas when a land ambulance would take far longer to arrive. You cannot under-estimate the importance of the service.
In addition to operating a HEMS service (Helicopter Emergency Medical Service), the charity also run Children’s Wales Air Ambulance. The Children’s Wales Air Ambulance is a specialist division of the charity, providing the expert care and transport required for paediatric and neonatal patients. Around 400 children and babies a year, either on emergency 999 missions or by using our dedicated transfer helicopter benefit from this fantastic service and income from the lifesaving lottery is also used to help fund the operations.
