Wales Air Ambulance fundraisers Luke Murphy and Iain Williams took the opportunity to meet the pilot and have a look around the helicopter on a recent trip to Caernafon in North Wales.
Luke has been recruiting new members for Wales AA Lifesaving Lottery since July 2018 and had previously visited the airbase in Dafen, but following a move back to his native North Wales and while scouting for potential venues, he popped in for a cup of tea at the airport café and had his picture taken alongside HELIMED 61 which is housed there.
Wales AA operate four helicopters and attend around 2,500 missions each year. Despite covering vast mountain ranges and copious amounts of rural countryside, their helicopters can reach anywhere in Wales within 20 minutes of being deployed. This can often be the difference between life and death and in order to run this service, the charity needs to raise in excess of £6.5m a year. Fundraisers like Luke and Iain play a pivotal part in generating new members for the lifesaving lottery, which in 2019 raised over £4m.
